PUBLISHER’S NOTE: FIRST LADY OF CORPORATE IDENTITY

Elinor Selame Elinor Selame, a pioneer in the disciplines of corporate identity and package design, passed away on June 6. Founding the identity and branding consultancy, Selame Design, with husband Joe Selame in 1960, she emerged as the first woman to lead a first tier consultancy of this nature. (Today, her firm lives on as BrandEquity International.) In addition, she served as president of the Package Design Council and the Brand Design Association. In the September ’08 Graphic Design USA magazine, we will publish a more complete tribute, written by design expert and author Frank C. Briggs. But for the many readers who have not experienced the overt sexism that hung heavily over the advertising and design industries in past decades — you can, of course, tune into Mad Men to get the flavor — this excerpt from Mr. Briggs’ piece is eye-opening and instructive:

“Mrs. Selame was a contemporary of Saul Bass, Paul Rand, Morton Goldsholl, Jerome Gould, Alan Fletcher and G. Dean Smith, leaders of corporate identity, branding and package design now deceased. Her firm competed regularly with other noted first tier consultancies, including Raymond Loewy, Lippincott & Margulies, Landor, Chermayeff & Geismar, Siegel & Gale and Pentagram. Corporate identity and branding, a profession largely dominated by men, is considered by many to be the most demanding field of visual communication. In every conceivable way imaginable Mrs. Selame was the leader of the pack... Throughout her career she opened doors, provided opportunity, and educated legions of analysts, strategists, evangelists and designers... For nearly fifty years Elinor Selame walked among the giants of corporate identity practice, never behind them, always beside them, often times in front of them, without question she was their equal.”

Ranking Reputations
Corporate America’s overall reputation is in decline, according to Harris Interactive’s ninth annual corporate reputation survey, but the companies at the top of the list continue to improve their standing. “While the overall image is down, the American public has grown smart enough to discern those who are proactive about their reputations and give them credit for it,” says Robert Fronk, senior consultant of reputation strategy at Harris Interactive. Google topped this year’s ranking, scoring first or second in categories such as financial performance, social responsibility, vision/leadership and workplace environment. Rounding out the top ten, in order: Johnson & Johnson, Intel, General Mills, Kraft Foods, Berkshire-Hathaway, 3M, Coca-Cola, Honda and Microsoft. Not surprisingly, companies with the highest reputational scores were also the ones most likely to be recommended by consumers for products and/or investment, according to the survey. “Companies that pay attention to enhancing their reputation see bottom-line results,” comments Fronk. On the downside: Halliburton yields the lowest company reputation while the airline industry as a whole receives negative marks from 74% of Americans.

Interactive Accelerates
Interactive media’s share of worldwide advertising expenditures — the internet, mobile and gaming — will likely reach 15 percent in 2009, nearly double the amount recorded four years ago, according to a new study by GroupM. According to the study, this bundle of activities will be the largest source of advertising growth as ad spending in traditional media continues to decline, according to the study. The survey showed that ad spending in interactive media reached 11 percent last year, helped in part by the increased use and availability of improved handsets, inexpensive laptops, faster broadband and extensive WiFi connections. The survey covered 35 countries and shows digital advertising’s share of total ad investment rising from 8 percent in 2005 to 15 percent in 2009.

Playful Homage
Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Ken Carbone, founding partner and chief creative director of the Carbone Smolan Agency, New York NY, was invited to participate in KahloRivera100, an international visual homage to Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera sponsored by Alliance Graphique International (AGI). The exhibition is currently open at the Club de Banqueros de Mexico A.C. in Mexico City. KahloRivera100 celebrates the 100th anniversary of Kahlo’s birth and the 50th anniversary of Rivera’s death. Carbone designed a playful homage to the iconic couple. “I am especially honored to participate because I have a personal interest in the notorious dynamic between Frida and Diego. Their relationship has inspired me to create a poster that can be seen two different ways, depending on the viewer’s preference for either artist,” says Carbone. “I chose to emulate the structure of a playing card, as it best demonstrates the duality of this royal couple in the history of art.”

Take Five! TAKE FIVE! CAREER TIPS FROM THE CREATIVE GROUP: FIVE STEPS TO A PEACEFUL VACATION

Summer’s here, and whether you’ve planned an across-the-world voyage or a “staycation,” chances are you may spend some time out of the office. To make the most of your break (and avoid a post-vacation work pileup) try the following five tips:

1. Use out-of-office functions. Leave messages on your email and voicemail letting people know you’re away and who to contact in your absence.

2. Get lost. Sure, detaching from your cell phone and BlackBerry may cause initial anxiety, but a few days without interruptions can be blissful. Consider get-away spots that lack wireless service — a wilderness backpacking excursion, perhaps?

3. Set boundaries. If you must check in, let people know specifically when and how you want to be contacted.

4. Hand it over. Ask a coworker to handle some of your duties, and offer to return the favor.

5. Bring in reinforcements. Bring in freelancers to take over while you’re out to prevent a backlog of projects.

Highly Saturated
Planet Propaganda Planet Propaganda of Madison WI expands upon the success of its “Upgrade” advertising campaign for Bontrager bicycle wheels and components. The 2008 campaign maintains the tightly focused, highly saturated, fashion-quality photos. The campaign continues “to play on the fears and aspirations of serious cyclists by combining drool-worthy product imagery with athletes that have tested and chosen Bontrager on their own bikes,” says associate creative director, Dave Taylor. Tour de France and Giro d’Italia winner Alberto Contador and American National champion Levi Leipheimer are among the recognizable names and faces appealing to Bontrager’s core cycling and racing audience and corresponding magazines. Taylor worked with photographer Jeff Salzer; Natascha Grief is Bontrager’s brand manager.
