PUBLISHERS NOTE: THE
ART OF RECYCLING
Eco-consciousness has permeated American commerce and
culture. Our coverage of the graphic design industry rubs
up against it at every turn. Perfect examples: our upcoming
May Color Forecast and June Print Design Survey are both
shaped by environmental beliefs and factors. And consider
the LogoLounge report in the current (April) magazine. If
you have not read Bill Gardner’s insightful LogoLounge
article from beginning to end, you should. In particular,
don’t miss his brief but compelling analysis of how
designers, reflecting the growing corporate embrace of
sustainability, are using the recycling symbol in more
diverse, strategic and creative ways. “Slowly
[the recycling symbol] has been on an upward pilgrimage,”
he notes, “from the bottom of the container to the
priciest real estate on the package face.” Even more
important, the symbol is being “redressed as the
logo itself... reuse of this symbol as a logo proves that
designers have truly mastered the art of recycling.”

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“The choice we face is not between saving our
environment and saving our economy — it’s a
choice between prosperity and decline.”
— President Obama, Earth Day Speech, Newton IA
THINKING GREEN
Wink Creates Attitude
Rebel Green, a new family of responsibly made products,
reached out to Wink for branding and product development
for its chic and edgy range of eco-friendly, made in America,
organic cotton products. From apparel to reusable shopping
bags and even a fruit and veggie clean spray, the result is
“a brand that’s authentic and a product line
that’s uniquely Eco-Americana,” say design firm
principals Richard Boynton and Scott Thares. They note that
the designs for Rebel Green also include “just a dash
of ‘you’re not the boss of me’ thrown in
for good measure.”
Economy Dampens Green Enthusiasm
In a survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults, a study by
Gfk Roper found that consumer concern for the environment
over the economy fell from 69 percent in 2007 to 55 percent
in 2008. Given the tough economic times, the environmental
topics of priority for consumers were not so much
broad-based issues like “the rainforests”
or “water pollution”, but instead on practical
green action such as finding efficient, inexpensive and
renewable energy. Interestingly, consumers are not
scrimping in some “green” categories, notably
using recycled paper and green household cleaning
products.

Public Printer Keynote Speaker
The Green Media Conference will feature Robert C.
Tapella, Public Printer of the United States. Tapella
will be discussing the role of the GPO in greening the
communications of the federal government, both print and
digital. As the largest printer and print buyer in the
nation, the GPO’s approach to tracking its
sustainability efforts has a profound effect on the
entire printing industry. The conference is hosted by
SustainCommWorld on June 9 in Washington D.C.

The Winner Is... Nobody
Which consumer brand was voted to have succeeded in
building a green and eco-friendly image in
Brandchannel’s 2009 brandjunkie awards? The
resounding response: “none” came in first. For
the second year in a row, consumers expressed skepticism
about co-friendly claims, and expressed resentment
about greenwashing. A voter wrote, “There is a
lot of bluster about being green, but anyone who
produces anything that uses energy or that is consumed
is not being green. The greenest thing most companies
and their customers can do is not to consume.”

Green Machine
Pepsi is taking steps to reduce the emissions of
greenhouse gas and hydroflourocarbons from their vending
machines. The company has redesigned their vending
machines to emit 12 percent less greenhouse gas and use
carbon dioxide, a natural refrigerant, instead of
HFCs. This is reputedly the first time carbon dioxide
has cooled America’s vending machines. Pepsi says
it is also eliminating HFCs from the insulating foam in
vending machines, coolers and fountain equipment.

and design firm specializing in branding, design, new
media and public relations, has launched a Green Design
Practice Group. The firm will offer its full suite of
services to companies and organizations that are

fashion its latest series of reusable shopping bags. The
limited edition bags, which arrive this month, feature
the designers’ signatures on the bottom, and will
be exclusively displayed and sold in more than 600 JC
Penney stores. From 58 entries, three winners from the
Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in
California (shown here), the Savannah College of Art

Roughstock Reduces
Andrew Cook, owner of a software consulting firm,
has written an all-around eco-friendly book,
Supermarket Facilities Management, for a simple
reason: the more efficiently grocery stores run, the
cheaper and more accessible food becomes for the
public. The book design by Roughstock Studios, reflects
the sustainability issues addressed in the text. The
book, to be updated frequency, was printed in limited
runs to avoid a wasteful surplus of outdated editions. Other
steps included reducing raw materials required on press,
and a 100 percent recycled, chlorine free paper with
soy-based ink. In the process, says the studio, an
estimated 3 million BTUs of energy were saved.

built upon as an ongoing strategy for the company. In
addition to green user content and items for sale.

Don’t Call Them Garbage Trucks
In honor of Earth Day, the City of Philadelphia Recycling
Office unveiled ten new Recycling Trucks, with ten exterior
wraps designed by school students in the city’s Mural
Arts Program. “The trucks’ beautiful designs are
a unique way to complement the City’s fleet,”
says LevLane account supervisor Neil Simpkins. “Perhaps
it will encourage City residents to think about how they can
beautify their neighborhoods. And, hopefully, their
visibility will re-emphasize and re-enforce the importance
of recycling. Recycling not only protects the environment, it
also saves the City money because it keeps items out of
the landfills.” Lead artist: Desireé Bender of
the Mural Arts Program.
Free BlackBerry Applications
Neenah Paper has introduced a series of useful applications
for BlackBerry smartphones. The first application provides
mobile access to Neenah’s eco-calculator and is
available now. It allows the user to instantly calculate
the environmental savings from using paper made with
postconsumer fiber as well as the savings from using paper
made with 100% renewable energy. “Because information
is power, a wireless application like our eco-calculator
brings real value in real time. Decisions can be made faster,
and that is critical to our customers,” says Meredith
Grant, Environmental Marketing Representative at Neenah Paper.

Closing The Loop
Mohawk Fine Papers helped Whole Foods Market become the
first national retailer to produce all of its national
in-store Earth Month materials using “third
generation” closed-loop recycled paper. This means
that Whole Foods has recycled and reused its own paper
for zero waste, and that the same fibers have been used
to manufacture the paper three separate time.
Joining Climage Exchange
Domtar joins the Chicago Climate Exchange, voluntarily
committing to achieve an absolute greenhouse gas emissions
reduction of 6 percent below its 2000 emission levels. The
Chicago Climate Exchange is North America’s only
active voluntary, legally binding cap-and-trade system.
Domtar’s quest for energy efficiency and the reduction
of its environmental footprint are integral parts of the
company’s focus on sustainable practices. It has
already completed a campaign to reduce its greenhouse gas
emissions by decreasing use of fossil fuel consumption by 21 percent.
