Sustainability matters in print and paper choices, according to the results of our 46th
Annual Print Design Survey. The full story is in the upcoming June issue of Graphic Design
USA magazine. That green issues are increasingly important is exemplified by several
survey findings: (1) a record 58% of designers say they specify recycled and
environmentally-friendly papers; (2) 57% say they are doing this more so this year than
in the past; (3) nearly half of all designers say that third party certifications from
the likes of FSC and SFI influence their decisions; (4) print buyers are actively
looking for eco-friendly vendors; and (5) nine-in-ten creatives say that
sustainability often shapes how they approach a design project. A special advance
thanks to Agfa Graphics for sponsoring the survey and report. It is a nice fit:
Agfa Graphics recently inducted its 100th customer into an elite group of printers
who have been honored in the past year by the GreenWorks™ Recognition
Program. Launched one year ago, Agfa's GreenWorks is an integral part of the
company's environmental recognition and support efforts, honoring Agfa customers
that are proactively involved in environmental responsibility — and working to
connect them with creative professionals and print buyers who are seeking
“green” printers. For a full listing of Agfa's Green Works

Have you ever eaten four or five extra Snackwell cookies
and justified it by saying they are a lower calorie snack? The result: each cookie
may have fewer calories, but your overall intake has increased. This same behavior,
chronicled in a recent report by University of Michigan economist Lucas Davis, may
also affect owners of energy efficient products. In recent consumer surveys, many
people say they have taken steps to buy more energy efficient products, but still
do not seem to be banking savings in their energy bills. A possible reason, according
to the non-profit American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, is that people
who believe their devices are more energy efficient tend to use them more and leave
them on longer. Thus, energy saving products may lead to more energy
usage. Proof, once again, that life is complex and full of surprises. A member of the
Council told USA Today: “People who install efficient lights lose 5%-12%
of the expected energy savings by leaving them on longer.”
Goodby Picks Up Green Pencil
The 34th annual One Show presented its first ever Green Pencil Award honoring the
excellence in the field of environmentally-conscious advertising. Ad agency
BoonOakley, Charlotte NC, developed the Green Pencil campaign, which
included a full page and spread advertising as well as a one-of-a-kind greeen
colored trophy made out of recycled glass. The award itself was presented
by rapper Ludacris to Haagen Daaz, and its agency Goodvy
Silverstein & Partners, for a Help the Honeybees campaign.
Green Teens
While the millennial generation — born after 1978 — is the most
passionate and educated about environmental issues, its members lack
steadfast commitment. The Generate research firm conducted a marketing
poll targeting teens, tweens, and young adults. It found that 74% of young
people believe they can save the Earth. On the other hand, they could
generally be swayed away from “green” purchases and
solutions when presented with more convenient options, lower prices
and simpler solutions. The research found that 71% of teens (ages 13-17)
surveyed would be tempted to choose a less expensive product over
one that gave back to the environment.
Celebrity Green
The 2009 Heart of Green Awards, organized by the Daily Green, were
featured on MSNBC, Access Hollywood and Ecorazzi this year. The awards
recognize individuals and organizations that help green go mainstream in media
and society by bringing exposure to the issue. Award winners included Alicia
Silverstone and Gloria Reuben and NRDC president Frances
Beinecke. Altogether, eleven environmental advocates were
honored at ceremonies, sponsored by eBay, and held at the LEED
gold-certified Hearst Tower in New York City.
Sustaining San Francisco
Academy of Art University has signed on to participate in Design Ignites Change
— a program that encourages students to address social issues in their local
communities through public design projects — under the theme of Sustaining San
Francisco. This is an interdepartmental series of projects for improving the quality
of Bay Area life. This Spring, masters level classes in Graphic Design, Photo, Industrial
Design, Furniture Design and Fashion Design have been developing
discipline-specific solutions. Many alumni are acting as mentors. In addition to
sharing their processes and results on the Design ignites Change website, students
will also prepare a traveling exhibition.

Women In The Environment
Noted paper and print industry expert Derek Smith has put together a program called
‘Women in the Environment' which will be presented at the Museum for Women
in the Arts in Washington DC on Tuesday June 30. Smith notes that “women
have been a major force in so many areas in driving sustainability programs forward
and I have brought together some outstanding speakers from various aspects of
sustainability to talk about the reasons that sustainability programs are still going
forward in spite of, or some might say because of, the recession.”

Consumer Skepticism Lingers
In 18,000 ads in recent issues of Time, Fortune, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated
and Vanity Fair, TerraChoice found that more than 10% of all ads in 2008 made
some sort of “green” claim. As the number of claims have grown, so has
consumer skepticism. A study released by Havas Media reports that 64% of respondents
view sustainability campaigns as a marketing tool instead of a reflection of reality. Markets
succeeding relatively well in their campaigns are food, retail and telecommunications
companies; oil and automotive sectors not so much.

Disposables On Display
Brunner has created a new ad campaign for Zippo Manufacturing Co. differentiating the
lighter manufacturer from its competition. Titled “Wasteland,” two print
spreads and one Flash banner depict a compacted trash cube and an underground
repository of spent, disposable lighters. The tagline, and the ads' only copy is
“Disposable. Just another word for garbage.” The campaign targets
both ecology-minded consumers. playing to Zippo's strengths as a refillable and
reusable lighter. The campaign will begin in Pittsburgh and will undoubtedly spread
across the country.

Fan Can Recycling
A new line of recycling receptacles aims to capitalize on sports fans' enthusiasm for their
teams. The Fan Can is designed to integrate corporate marketing messages including
recycling and sustainability at sports venues. It was first introduced at the Washington
Nationals complex, with 100 such cans being sponsored by Coca-Cola. Decked out
with lids shaped like helmets used by baseball batters, football players and motor
sports drivers, the cans are made of up to 50% post-consumer and industrial plastic.
Turn A NewPage
NewPage Corporation, a leading producer of publication papers in North America, has
launched the “Free Paper to Reach More” campaign that aims to help
retail catalog companies reach more consumers. The campaign awards five catalog
companies with a grand-prize of 100 tons of paper to help reach new
prospects. NewPage is committed to fostering sustainability within the catalog industry.
Oh, Canada!
In celebration of World Graphics Day, Canada's design professionals adopted a
working definition of sustainable communication design. During the annual
meeting of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada in April, the group
came up with a working definition: “Sustainable communication design
is the application of sustainability principles to communication design
practice. Practitioners consider the full life cycle of products and services
and commit to strategies, processes and materials that value environmental,
cultural, social and economic responsibility.”
Peter Wilkens, President of Agfa Graphics N.A.
“We see a trend where businesses in general must
reduce waste, conserve resources, use the most efficient tools and innovative equipment
to distinguish themselves from their competition. In doing so, these businesses are able
to provide their customers with real value and savings. At Agfa, we operate with this
philosophy in mind as reflected in our portfolio of products.”
