PUBLISHERS NOTE: POSSIBLY BY MISTAKE

31conversations I made a video for the new online archive — Thirty Conversations On Design — an initiative triggered by Little&Company's thirtieth anniversary. As explained by Joseph Cecere, Vice President, Creative Director, of the Minneapolis design firm, 30 designers, architects, curators and editors were invited to take part, with the goal of starting an “archive for years to come... creating a literal history of what inspires the people who inspire us and the problems they think the design community should tackle.” Looking at the other participants, you gotta believe I was chosen thirtieth — or possibly by mistake. Still, I took the opportunity to pound on a few of my favorite themes: the value of authenticity to a branding message, the gravitas that print still brings to important projects, and the challenge of designing in an era of information overload that cheapens our brands, politics and culture. Had I known I was going to be taped that day, I'd have put on a nicer shirt and combed my hair. Still, come take a look and, if you like, join the conversation. (More on the project, as well as the link, later in this enewsletter.)

— Gordon Kaye

GRAPHIC DESIGN NEWS

Simple And Immediate
adc Rebranding for The Art Directors Club “expresses a simple, blunt and immediate way to unabashedly clarify and reassert the club's leadership in the creative community,” says Brian Collins, co-head of the Club's Rebranding Committee. The other co-head, Jakob Trollbäck, developed and executed the design. Founded in 1920, the Art Directors Club is the original creative club. The new identity is said to emphasize that legacy. “Companies and organizations usually use acronyms in their branding to distance themselves from their past,” says Trollbäck “In our case, we wanted to do the exact opposite and embrace our origins and heritage.”

NBC Suit No Joke
NBC Universal is being sued for unauthorized use of three fonts on, among others, the Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live shows. The Font Bureau, founded by David Berlow and Roger Black, brought the trademark infringement case after NBC allegedly bought one software license but distributed Bureau Grotesque, Interstate and Antenna widely within the company. On SNL, fake news anchor Seth Meyers reported the law suit but observed that the joke was on the claimant: “NBC doesn't have two million dollars,” he said.

millman Looking Both Ways
Debbie Millman, branding consultant and new AIGA president, takes a very personal look at the relationship between design, objects, creativity and her everyday life in “Look Both Ways: Illustrated Essays on the Intersection of Life and Design.” Rather than simply letting words speak for themselves, Millman crafts each message in the book to have visual impact and communicate the core ideas at a glance. Several of the original pieces that make up the book will be featured in an exhibit at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, later this winter. HOW Books is the publisher.

Serious About Investment
Despite the global economic recession, nearly 29,000 visitors from more than 10,500 companies showed up to Chicago's McCormick Place for Print 09. Nearly seven hundred exhibitors showcased graphic communications equipment, products and services. Attendees with significant purchasing influence hailed from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and more than 90 other countries. Ralph Nappi, president of the Graphic Arts Show Company, which is already planning the 2010 Graph Expo event for next fall, says: “What this data tells us is that, even with a slowed economy, graphic communications companies are looking to their future business needs; they were serious about making short equipment investments and exploring new technologies for future investment.”

BRIDGEMAN BLANK CANVAS COMPETITION

The competition is on! Bridgeman invites graphic designers and design students to participate in their first annual competition. Here's your chance to redefine a fine art masterpiece, by creating a modern version of what that work means to you. The people at Bridgeman are giving you a blank canvas with only one central rule: your design should be inspired by one of ten pre-selected iconic paintings.

Sparkling Campaign
IZZE Vermilion's marketing campaign and online promotion for the IZZE Beverage Company is titled “You'll Love What's Inside.” Focusing on the sparkling nature of the juices, the Boulder CO design and interactive agency centered the online campaign around a Sparkle Generator through which people can send their friends “sparkles” — messages that describe what's special about a friend “inside” which, it is hoped, reflects the product's core brand equities. “It's really all about community,” according to Creative Director Paul DesRosiers. Print ads provide support in Details, Entertainment Weekly, GQ, InStyle and People.

Microsoft Opens Apple Store
Well, you know what we mean. Microsoft has opened two retail stores, one in Scottsdale AZ and another in Mission Viejo CA. The opening comes just as the software giant introduces Windows 7. In a statement, David Porter, corporate vice president, Microsoft Retail, says: “We want to showcase what's possible with the full Microsoft brand.” The stores have a clean, simple, modern look; more are planned early next year.

Dream Job
Jung With the release of “The Red Book” by C.G. Jung, O Group Design Director Eric Baker can finally take a moment to appreciate his year long labor of love. Baker developed the design and layout for what experts call “the most influential unpublished work in the history of psychology.” Collaborating with editor Sonu Shamdasani and art director, Larry Vigon, Baker designed the 416 page book, from the cover and binding to the extensive typographical treatment of the translation, the layout of the pages and the footnotes. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be able to partner with Jungian scholars and other design colleagues to bring this important work, which had been long sequestered by the Jung family, to the general public,” said Baker. O Group is based in New York; W.W. Norton is the publisher.

Lots To Read
Adrienne Carlson has posted a useful article on the Graphic Design Degrees blog entitled “Top 100 Graphic Design Blogs.” It is an interesting collection, especially for younger designers and students, to learn more about the graphic design profession and to find out where the jobs and informational resources lay. GDUSA is not a blog (not yet, anyway) but where pleased to be listed as a key resource.

The Mother Road
66 Route 66, a 16-page booklet of photographs taken by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Edward Keating, and curated by creative director and firm owner Lynda Decker, shatters the myth of America's “Mother Road” as a path to a better life and shows it for what it has become: a corridor of raw hopelessness. The short run, limited edition book was printed by Digital Color Concepts. It is the first in a series intended to show how expert graphic design and printing can amplify the impact of photographic art.

takefiveTAKE FIVE! CAREER TIPS FROM THE CREATIVE GROUP

PERFORMANCE REVIEW TIME
The end of the year is almost here, which means it's performance review time for many employees. This is a great opportunity to highlight your professional achievements - strengthening your personal brand and increasing your chances of earning a raise or a promotion. Following are five tips to help you make the most of these meetings:

1. Jog Your Memory. Before your review, make a list of your accomplishments and how your efforts benefited the firm.

2. Arrive With Ideas. Your manager will likely solicit your input on what you hope to achieve in the coming months and if you would like any changes made to your role.

3. Treat The Review As A Two-Way Conversation. How you listen and respond to feedback is crucial. Think of the meeting as an opportunity to work with your supervisor to develop a plan to move your career forward.

4. Dish It Out, Carefully. Use the review to diplomatically provide your manager with feedback. This is your chance to request more guidance or resources you might need to meet your objectives.

5. Create An Action Plan. Always finish the discussion by setting specific goals to work toward. To make the next review more productive, start by tracking your achievements and challenges now.

MORE CONVERSATION

Here is Joe Cecere's more fulsome thoughts behind the Thirty Conversations On Design project:

“As part of Little&Company's thirtieth anniversary, we wanted to do something cool for the agency and design community. So, we started asking designers and clients we knew if they'd submit a video on what inspires them to do great work for an online archive that we would create. We got a lot of really positive support right off the bat, and from there, the idea kind of took on a life of it's own. Soon, we had designers, architects, curators, editors, authors from around the world. All willing to help bring this fledgling idea to life. Now, our hope is that we can continue to build the archive for years to come...creating a literal history of what inspires the people who inspire us and the problems they think the design community should tackle.”
