DESIGNISM

Bill Bernbach, founder of Doyle Dane Bernbach, once stated: "All of us who professionally use mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgarize that society. We can brutalize it. Or we can lift it to a high level." I saw this quote while at the Art Directors Club in New York for it's inspired and inspiring Designism event. Leading personages explored how creatives can use their talents for social change and betterment. For more, see the upcoming October issue of Graphic Design USA. Meanwhile, thumbs up to the likes of Milton Glaser, George Lois, Jessica Helfand and Stephen Heller for uplifting us with examples and commentary on graphic design for the public good, and to Executive Director Myrna Davis and Brian Collins of Oglivy's Brand Innovation Group for developing the idea. Thumbs down to panelist James Victore, self-cast in the all-too-familiar role of angry artiste, a self-declared anti-authorian, who chose to work out some daddy issues by vulgarizing the event with a hateful (expletive deleted) childish (expletive deleted) tirade against (expletive deleted) President Bush. I get it that George Bush makes alot of people crazy, everyone gets it. But here's a note to wannabe presenters at design events: Do not confuse alienation or rage at authority with having an actual insight worth sharing with the audience or the world, even if popping off gets a cheap laugh. It is bad for your profession, for yourself, and for the social fabric. Bill Bernbach clearly understood that.

TRENDSPOTTING

Gift cards will be a top gift choice this coming holiday season. Patricia Pao of Pao Principle in New York says that in this highly personalized era, more and more gift recipients want to choose their own gift, and many givers are happy to oblige since it is a time saving and a convenience.

Touring events are hot. Marketers are hitting the road to forge an emotional bond with consumers. An example is Ocean Spray, which has set up replicas of cranberry bogs at popular tourist sites. Others include the Planters Nut Mobile and the Green Truck Tour of Windstream Communications.

Emaciated fashion models are under attack. First Madrid banned superthin models, and now a British cabinet minister has proposed the same thing for shows in London. The measure is Body Mass Index, a height to weight ratio. The movement is expected to pick up speed, even faster than models do.

Speaking of fashion, Pantone is predicting the Top 10 ready-to-wear colors for Spring, featuring a greater variety of neutrals and several bright new hues. According to color expert Leatrice Eiseman, runways "will radiate with surprising neutrals and innovative splashes of corals, yellows and purples." See the choices at www.pantone.com/spring2007
