HARMONY AND
NESTING
Asked for an overview
of the factors shaping color palettes and choices today, Leatrice
Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute,
explains:
"Reflecting
the continuing quest for harmony as a result of protracted
anxieties over global problems and a listless economy, color
for 2004 is all about the need to nest. The nest may be filled
with quiet, unassuming shades or bolder accents against neutral
tones. There are many moods to choose from, but the colors
have to combine well, so they are pleasing and not disturbing
- even the more vibrant colors harmonize. An already competitive
world becomes even more competitive when there is a downturn
in the economy, so color must be used in a very thoughtful,
educated way to gain the attention of the consumer. When we
are economically stressed, we go back to neutral colors, particularly
for high-ticket items. Graphic designers should be adapting
to this trend by bouncing more vibrant colors off of neutral
shades."
Shades like the
sophisticated polignac, warm garnet, deep cognac and earthy
cinnabar are modern breaths of unconventionality, yet when
paired with the sharp chords of vibrant mineral yellow, well-patined
dull gold and enigmatic midnight, imbue a modern edge to this
season's palette.
"These
complex colors have an innate elegance," observes Eiseman.
"Like a fine orchestra, they can perform solo or in duets
to create combinations that are a vibrant melting pot of ease
and drama - depicting the harmony we, as Americans, strive
for."
