papers and substrates for design

From spa trips to philanthropic grants to pumped up competitions, these ain't your father's (or mother's) paper promotions. Except, of course, they are, in the sense that the century-long synergy between design and paper continues to yield exceptional materials, promotions, resources and ideas generated for creatives by the paper industry.

This spring's crop favors three often interwoven approaches: lots of education about how to get the most impact out of print, p-o-p and packaging communication; simpler and more unified swatchbooks and reference materials for ease and speed of specification; more interaction between digital design, printing and substrates; and an increase in experiences such as awards programs and event sponsorships.

The materials noted here are available, in most cases, through local distributors. They can also be obtained by filling out the Reader Service Card at the back of the magazine. Lastly, we have included websites and toll-free numbers for direct contact, where applicable.

stora enso
premium promotions
Stora Enso North America has released its latest Centura promotion. The Centura 100% Premium Matte booklet boldly compares the performance and value of Centura Matte against competitors' coated matte and uncoated sheets. The piece compares the same printed 4/C image, with color bars for density readings, on Centura Matte, competitive matte and uncoated sheets. The Centura Matte promo also highlights cost savings benefits of about 9% with respect to competitors' matte paper, and up to 40% savings versus others' uncoated paper.

color back in fashion
At a time when many mills are getting out of the dark color paper business, Wausau is introducing a complete line of dark and fashion-forward colored papers. The Royal Complements line is a 100 lb., acid free cover stock with an antique finish, available in 11 rich shades such as Citron, Tuscan Sun and Violet Fog. "There will always be a need and demand for dark colors," says Charlie Peth, vice president of sales and marketing at Wausau. "What we found is that the current selection just needed some updating. We brought together a group of professional designers and trend analysts who developed the color palette as a direct reflection of marketplace demand." The Royal Complements initiative is part of a larger effort to create a "mix and match" system of color parity across all the company's lines; each Royal Complements paper is a deeper shade of a lighter color in the Royal Fiber, Royal Linen, Royal Marble and Royal Silk Plus lines.
