Beverly Hills CA: Zoa Martinez, president and creative director of the Hispanic-owned and New York-based ZONA Design, a motion design and branding studio, recently spoke at the inaugural National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) Creative Summit. In 1980, NAMIC was founded to raise awareness, expand opportunity and shape the future. To further that end, the summit featured a number of forums and a career expo focusing on the creative side of the industry. ZONA's portfolio includes projects for the Disney and ESPN Networks, AOL Time Warner, Encore Media Group, Rainbow Media Holdings and the A&E television network.

Hollywood CA: The creative design and production company Troika Design Group recently announced the addition of design industry veteran Gil Haslam to its creative team. Haslam has freelanced with the firm since last year. Prior to joining Troika, Haslam was director of design at Novocom, where he was responsible for all aspects of creative design and production. In that post, Haslam art directed ABC's "Monday Night Football" and ESPN's "Sunday Night Football," for which he received an Emmy nomination. Troika Design Group specializes in network branding, show package design and advertising and promotional campaigns. Clients include ABC, Comedy Central and ESPN.

Tampa FL: Roberts Communication and Marketing Inc. recently hired Pamela Lewis as copywriter and Joel Barbosa as graphic artist. Lewis arrives at the agency after a period spent freelancing. She previously worked at The Boner Group, Venue Advertising and Campbell Mithun, and attended the Miami Ad School. Barbosa holds a B.A. in mass communications from the University of South Florida. While there, he served as president of the advertising club and worked at the university's newspaper, The Oracle.

A 1990 graduate of Kent State, he has worked at Fisher Design, Graphica, Trone Advertising, Powell Creative Group, Skyline Displays and, most recently, as design director at Libby Perszyk Kathman. VMA describes itself as "a design-driven branding firm located in the enterprise zone of Webster Station in Dayton."

Boston MA: Kelliher Samets Volk (KSV) taps Keith Brown for the position of senior designer. In this position, Brown will primarily focus on the Sugarbush Resort and CCBT Financial Companies accounts, while working with various designers and art directors on other projects. Prior to joining KSV, Brown filled art director and senior designer positions at Jager DiPaola Kemp. He also co-founded Delux Design Associates, a Burlington VE design and marketing firm where he served as creative director. KSV is an advertising and marketing communications company with offices in Burlington and Boston.

Boston MA: Two new faces appear at The VIA Group. Mary Davenport Hanifin is director of creative services, a new post at VIA. She is responsible for overseeing production, art buying, traffic, studio operations and broadcast at the agency, according to cheif culture officer Rich Rico. Among Hanifin's earlier experiences: chief operating officer at Modernista!; vice president, creative services, at the agency then known as Holland Mark Edmund Ingalls; director of art buying at Arnold Communications; and, most recently, freelance broadcast producer and executive producer for Element Productions in Boston. Mark Sannicandro comes aboard as senior art director. In this position, Sannicandro is working on the BrownCo and Banknorth Group accounts. Prior to joining VIA, Sannicandro was associate creative director at CPS Direct, working with Bombadier Skyjet, Great West Insurance and Mercantile Bankshares. He is a graduate of Framingham State College, received his M.F.A. from Penn State and is also a Ph.D. candidate in art history there.

Oradell NJ: Associate creative director Marc Jacobson has threefold responsibilities at Sigma Group: helping to manage the creative direction of new and existing campaigns, helping direct the agency's staff of art directors and copywriters and doing his own copywriting. The new post comes just eight months after Jacobson joined Sigma, notes executive creative director Bob Santangelo. Before joining the North Jersey agency, Jacobson was associated with Fort Productions, managing the Manhattan-based production and post-production facility. He has also served at the DKB & Partners advertising agency.

Cincinnati OH: Libby Perszyk Kathman (LPK) brings Amy Schwartz on as designer. Schwartz, a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, where she earned a BFA in graphic design, previously interned with LPK as a student. As a designer, Schwartz will contribute to beauty care brand accounts. LPK has developed and managed brand identities for some of the world's biggest companies, including Microsoft, IBM, Pantene, Pampers, Olay, Hershey's, Valvoline, Quicken, Heinz, AT&T and Hallmark.

New York NY: Toni DiMauro, a Flame artist skilled in design, compositing and beauty work, joins Click 3x. She comes from the freelance ranks, and recently worked with the studio in that capacity on projects for Road Runner High Speed Online and ESPN. Also as a freelancer, DiMauro worked extensively in the beauty segment, including several Neutrogena, Revlon and Victoria's Secret spots.

Los Angeles: Branding veteran Curt Doty joins 29HDNetwork as creative director. 29HDNetwork is a new cable channel now in the works, aimed at a "cosmopolitan" of 25 to 40-year-olds. As creative director, Doty is heading on-air promotions for the venture. Doty has launched over 20 television channels in his career, including the TV Guide Channel and Discovery Health.

S New York NY: A Poulin + Morris designer since 2000, Brian Brindisi has been made an associate of the firm. He has been responsible for project design, management and coordination for many clients including CNN, Columbia University School of Social Work, Dahesh Museum of Art, Mayo Clinic and Foundation, Omaha Performing Arts Center, WGBH Educational Foundation, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center and more. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, Brindisi is presently an adjunct professor at the school, where he teaches visual communications.

S (b/w pic) Minneapolis MN: The AIGA's Minnesota Chapter announces that Chip Pearson, owner and founder of The Foundation, will serve as director of technology. AIGA Minnesota is one of the largest chapters in the country. Pearson will oversee the technological needs of the chapter by providing Macintosh hardware and software support to office staff, enabling online registration capabilities for chapter events and offering long-term, practical solutions to allow the chapter to use technology to better serve its employees, volunteers and members.

rick atwood, jeff raby, jill qualls San Francisco CA: After a combined five decades building brands at some of the country's most recognized advertising and design firms, partners Rick Atwood, Jeff Raby and Jill Qualls have launched co:op west, a brand communications and design consultancy in San Francisco. Atwood was formerly a senior vice president at Hill, Holliday; Raby and Quall were both partners at Creatis Group. Previous clients include tech brands like Intel, Quantum and Motorola, but also more traditional consumer brands such as Kraft, Seagrams, Nike and Dreyer's. The focus of the co:op shop will be broad: corporate and brand identity, marketing collateral and systems, package system design, large format outdoor branding, vehicle branding and customer relationship marketing. marc jacobson

New York NY: Graphic arts veteran Maria D. Madera has joined Aldine as senior sales executive. She has over 25 years experience in the engraving and printing industries in the New York metropolitan area. Aldine, recently relocated to new offices at 150 Varick Street in Manhattan, specializes in engraving, thermography, offset printing and letterpress.

New York NY: ImageState continues to build its management strength with the appointment of Alison Jo Rigney as worldwide sales director and John McIntosh as chief financial officer. Rigney is a true industry professional with two decades of sales experience in the visual media business, having worked for Corbis, Image Bank and Index Stock. Prior to her career in stock photography, she worked in magazine publishing as an art buyer. Rigney joins ImageState from Corbis, where she was director of sales and service in New York and instrumental in building Corbis' commercial advertising business and integrating a program of cross-selling across all content collections into new market sectors. McIntosh first joined the company in July 2003 as interim financial director and was recently named CFO and a member of the Board of Directors. Leslie Hughes, the company's chief executive, comments: "ImageState is serious about becoming the preferred alternative to its big competitors. To accomplish this, we need to build out our team with experienced and talented professionals like Alison and John."

Columbus OH: Advertising agency Ten United recruits David Grzelak for the unusual position of director of ethnography. Previously marketing research manager at Hallmark and a consultant, Grzelak heads a newly formed Behavioral Insights Group that works with clients to gain a deeper understanding of their respective target markets. His degrees are in anthropology and business anthropology from Wayne State and Purdue, respectively. Ten United has roughly $185 million in billings for clients like Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Limited Brands, OhioHealth, Perkins Restaurants, Time-Warners Communications, Hoover and Prestige Brands including Murine, Comet and Prell.

Hollywood CA: Gaylen Guess is the founder and managing director of Cooked, a post production boutique providing motion graphic design, visual effects and full service post-production for short-form media. Art director and visual effects artist Patricio Motta heads the creative team. At presstime, Cooked has already wrapped up several projects, including graphic design for a trailer for this summer’s 20th Century Fox release Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Motto, an Argentine native, spent six years at Hollywood Digital, and his credits include main tile design for Dude, Where’s My Car, Darkness Falls, Bats and How High.

Lancaster PA: New leadership for the Kelly Michener agency comes with the hiring of Scott Margolis as creative director and the promotion of Mark Richwine to associate creative director. Margolis has worked at several agencies, including J. Walter Thompson, Bozell Worldwide and Fahlgren Advertising; he was most recently creative group head and senior art director at Eisner Communications in Baltimore. He has experience in print, broadcast and interactive. Richwine is described as "the creative force" behind many of Kelly Michener's campaigns for the likes of Turkey Hill Dairy, Erhlich Pest Control Company and Harrisburg International Airport. The agency is now in its 30th year, implementing comprehensive marketing programs involving research, branding, public relations, advertising and online communications.

Philadelphia PA: Advertising agency Tierny Communications hires Andrew Dalsass as senior art director. In this role, he will work primarily on the Commerce Bank, Martin Guitars, Philadelphia Phillies and Exelon accounts. Dalsass was previously senior art director at Digitas, a position he gained after freelancing and art directing at several firms. Tierney Communications, a full service strategic communications agency, is a member of the Interpublic Group.

Tampa FL: Former Tampa Tribune marketing designer Eugene Newcomb is now working at Roberts Communications & Marketing. With more than eight years of design experience, he is involved in developing original concepts and seeing them through from design to layout to production. At the newspaper, he art directed and designed marketing materials including posters, brochures, magazines, print collateral and advertisements.

Lincoln NE: Two new production artists join the Swanson Russell Associates creative team. The first, Kyle Gottschalk, is a native Nebraskan who previously worked at Cornerstone Printing as a graphic designer. He holds a BFA from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Staci Nass, the second new hire, previously worked at The Gallup Organization as a graphics report specialist. She attended The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Southeast Community College-Milford. Swanson Russell is a full service marketing communications firm serving the outdoor recreation, turf, agribusiness and healthcare industries.

New York NY: Tom O'Grady has founded a new sports and entertainment design and branding firm, Gameplan. Initial projects include brand identity for the launch of C-SET, Carolinas' Sports + Entertainment Television, and branding for the NBA Charlotte Bobcats (both for Robert Johnson, founder of BET Network), as well as the identity for the Arena Football League's Philadelphia Soul (whose owner is Jon Bon Jovi). Other early assignments have come from Big Apple Circus and Major League Baseball. O'Grady spent 13 years shaping the NBA brand, supervising the identity of 29 NBA teams, 16 WNBA teams and eight teams in the newly formed basketball minor league. A founding partner of the design firm is celebrity attorney Steve Mandell.

Milwaukee WI: Mader Communications Group welcomes Stacy Slutzky as an art director. She is designing print collateral, advertising, packaging and corporate and brand identity. Slutzky was previously a graphic designer at Potawatomi Bing Casino and has held positions at other Milwaukee design firms. A self-described "Mac nerd," she also composes original music and plays keyboard and violin. All this while refereeing the squabbles between 20 month old twin daughters.

Lisaius Marketing is a graphic design studio and marketing company that specializes in creating artwork and marketing materials for national and regional clients. Accounts include Blockbuster Video, Showtime Networks, Rossignol, ADT Security Services, Pioneer Entertainment, Long Trail Brewing Company and others.
