kit hinrichs captures color gamut
Having a high impact and being a quick read were key goals for this marketing piece produced to present the new features of Opus, a popular No. 2 coated paper from Sappi Fine Paper. A favorite among commercial printers, catalogers and direct marketers, Opus has now been optically engineered to capture a broader color gamut - a major plus for anyone trying to match what they see on proofs to what they see on press. For the brochure cover, Kit Hinrichs of Pentagram Design (pictured above) sought to illustrate that fact simply by featuring a closeup photograph of vibrantly colored chalks shot by Terry Heffernan. Bold statements that span the full breadth of each spread inside the 10î x 14î brochure communicate Opusís improved brightness, new satin web finish, bright-white shade and other assets. Even for readers who just flip through the brochure, the advantages of Opus canít be missed. Hinrichs, almost needless to say, is a partner in Pentagram and one of the leading designers, industry shapers and creative thinkers of our era. Contact: 800.882.IDEA or www.sappi.com

kuhlmann leavitt gets sweet task
corral designs forever green theme Rodrigo Corral (pictured above), who left Doubleday Books in 2002 to form his own design company, located in Manhattanís SoHo neighborhood, writes: ìWe created the Fox River Forever Green paper promotion with two goals in mind: to show how the line of post-consumer waste paper could be used, and to highlight products that were, like the paper, environmentally friendly. Because all of the featured products were different, from a car to a teacup made of sugar, we created a design that pulled everything together. We used techniques such as embossing and die-cutting to show off both the paper and the products. It was a collaborative effort with Rick Valicenti, Chee Pearlman, Emily Main and Kathy Merckx of Fox River Paper.î Rodrigo Corral Design Inc. focuses primarily on book cover design. Its clients span from Random House to independent publishers, with books that range from memoirs to novels to non-fiction. Corral has won numerous awards. Contact: 800.558.8327

thirst taps color visionary
Rick Valicenti (pictured) of Thirst in Chicago, writes: ìI can say with certainty that no two paper promotions are developed in the same manner. Each situation alters the Thirst design process. The Holly Hunt Oxford Collection began with my notion that a color visionary could align her high-end interior design sense with Gilbert's successful Oxford paper finish. Hollyís instinctive approach became the story. The promotion served both the Holly Hunt and Gilbert Paper branding. To complicate our process and increase the production value, 17 printers and engravers were commissioned to bring our designs to paper. The reward was an intense professional experience and a rich ephemeral artifact.î
