Hchung on theory and practice
Chung Design is behind the award-winning piece, The Art of Specification, recently released by International Paper. Principal Matt Young (pictured above), who designed the project, reports that International Paper sought to approach specification comprehensively, to explain how it works and why it is important. Accordingly, the promotion is divided into two parts. The ìTheoryî section highlights what drives people to make the choices they do. The ìPracticeî section delves into how a paperís finish and color can give a promotion a unique feel. Strathmore, Beckett, Via, Carolina and Accent Opaque are the premium IP brands used in the piece. Founded by Young in the early 90s, Chung Design has worked on a broad range of design projects; additionally, the company has extensive experience in working in the paper business, and has won numerous national design awards.

function: tells of improved form
Domtar Cornwall is a versatile, coated sheet popular among printers for greeting cards, calendars, brochures, pocket folders and more. Recent enhancements have made it brighter, whiter and glossier, and the fastest-drying coated Bristol product available in North America - thus dramatically reducing turnaround time for jobs requiring folding, foil stamping, embossing, scoring or die-cutting. The Atlanta-based design firm Function: was charged with creating a brochure announcing these enhancements while assuring printers and merchants that Domtar Cornwallís renowned attributes - reliability, consistent formation (very little print mottle) and tremendous versatility - had not been compromised. Function: combined eye-catching imagery and poignant slogans to perfectly communicate ìyour favorite sheet just got even better.î The firm, headed by managing partners Dana Castle and Michele Emmons DeHaven, has a particular expertise in developing communications tools for business-to-business, product-based companies. Along with Domtar, the Function: client roster includes Unisource, Georgia Pacific, Boral Bricks, Renaissance Tile and Bath and Dixie Foodservice Products.

doris mitsch by pentagram
In this striking book published Mohawk Paper Mills and printed on Mohawk Superfine, artist Doris Mitsch uses natural subjects to create images of exceptional clarity and beauty. Wired magazine has called Mitsch ìGeorgia OíKeeffe with a hi-res scanner.î In Doris Mitsch Scanning, familiar objects such as flowers and shells are represented from untraditional perspectives, so that the subject matter becomes a harmonious arrangement of line, color, light and darkness. ìI have a lot of questions about beauty,î says Mitsch. ìI find almost all natural shapes beautiful and most people agree that flowers, especially, are beautiful. Iím interested in what happens when you isolate familiar things and look at them with unfamiliar closeness and clarity or for unfamiliar perspectives.î Pentagram in New York designed the book. Laura Shore, Mohawkís vice president of marketing communications, challenged the Pentagram team to produce the job with conventional printing. ìThese days, most mill marketers would default to UV printing to capture the brilliant colors associated with Mitschís work. We felt that the saturated colors were achievable on Superfine... The final results exceeded our expectations and came very close to matching the inkjet output of the original prints.î Comments lead project designer Michael Bierut, ìDorisís original prints combine soft, deep colors and velvety blacks with razor sharp detail. There is no richer, more precise printing surface than Mohawk Superfine, and no paper would show the work quite as beautifully.î At Pentagram, Kerrie Powell joined Bierut in the design work.
