Debuting in The New York Times during the recent Republican National Convention, this MoveOn.org ad represents the print extension of Errol Morris’s much-talked about “Switch” tv spots. The pro-Kerry ad features disappointed Republicans that intend to vote Democrat in the November election. Bill Drenttel and Michael Bierut designed the print version with the assistance of Don Whelan. Tobias Frere-Jones’s Interstate typeface (one commonly used on highway signs) is employed to signal the connections that bind us all in both red states and blue.

But Tierney Communications recently used magazine advertising to point out that the instrument-maker remains relevant today. The spots juxtapose quotes from classic and new lyrics that were written on Martin guitars, including songs from The Dave Matthews Band, Gordon Lightfoot and John Mayer. Credits go to creative director Kelly Simmons, art director Glenn Stevens, copywriter John Halligan and photographer Bob Scott.

Red collaborated with Oliver Craske, the book’s editor, to craft, among several elements, a “press pass” title sticker, a mirrorboard silver and black cover, a foil-stamped slipcase and hand drawn signature font details. For the book, Craske compiled 40 years of rock n’ roll photography, including images by Steve Gullick, Mick Rock, Jill Furmanovsky, Ian Dickson and Rob Gruen, to name a few.
