Barneys New York
Reorganization To Recovery
Barneys New York tapped Galperin Design shortly after the former's high-profile financial reorganization in 1998. Well aware of Barneys' long-standing brand image, Galperin worked with the retailer's internal creative team (led by David New) and their new financial management, to develop a style and format for annual reports that is suitable for addressing shareholder concerns. Creative Director Peter Galperin and Art Director Kristina Paukulis note, "After one of our early concept presentation meetings with both creative and management present, someone in the room laughed and remarked that this was the first time both sides had ever agreed on anything. So I guess we got off to a good start. Beginning with a very pared-down, black-and-white report — appropriate for a company coming out of a reorganization plan — over the next few years, as their numbers improved, we were able to slowly add some bells and whistles, culminating in the award-winning 2003 Annual Report, which features a unique 9" square format, matte foil stamping on the cover and a rich, four-color interior incorporating many images from the fall and winter collection catalogs. When Barneys New York was purchased by a large fashion industry corporation last year, we liked to think that maybe our design work on their annual reports helped in some small way to make that deal happen."
