PEOPLETOWATCHglenn john arnowitz

Glenn John Arnowitz is the director of creative services at Wyeth, a research-based global pharmaceutical company where he manages an award-winning team of seven designers. He has worked as a typesetter, a paste-up artist, a dark room artist, a designer, an art director and a manager at companies such as Art & Antiques, Laura Ashley, Toys"R"Us and American Home Products. He spent much of the 1970s through the 90s performing and recording with various bands, and has produced music for Showtime, The Movie Channel, PBS, MTV, A&E and Penguin Putmnam. As if that isn't enough, he is an accomplished actor, as well. As a co-founder of InSource, Arnowitz is passionately committed to helping inhouse creatives to achieve design excellence and recognition. In this connection, he has contributed articles to GDUSA, HOW, The Creative Group's eZine, and others.

Is graphic design a growth industry? I'm very encouraged by the increase in opportunities available to inhouse designers over the past few years. Companies are now recognizing the benefits of having a strong internal creative team and are leveraging those talents for profit, growth and success. Internal creative departments have the potential for being the resource for all things design. Design touches every department in a corporation, giving inhouse designers a broader range of projects and interactions with a wider range of employees than anyone else in a company. In addition, many companies are now providing a boatload of incentives to lure designers to the other side so they can thrive creatively and be happy, productive employees. Still, we need to be more resourceful and savvy and take a proactive stance. The design industry has become very competitive. It's the idea that counts, the story and the way you visually communicate that idea. It's our expertise, talent, experience and in-depth knowledge of our corporate brand. That's the value we bring to the table.

Do graphic designers have a special responsibility to promote a green society? It's everyone's responsibility to help protect our environment and make the world a better place for future generations. I believe it's the small gestures that will make a difference. As visual artists, we're in a better position to attract attention to important issues and connect with people on an emotional level. Like all good literature, art and music, design has the power to persuade, stimulate and engage people.
