PEOPLETOWATCHjason rosenberg

Jason Rosenberg launched his career at Mother Jones magazine and immersed himself in publication design. He then accepted an offer he couldn't refuse: to head the art department at the legendary Alternative Tentacles Records, where he served as in-house art director for three years. Not satisfied with just one job, while at Alternative Tentacles Rosenberg launched his freelance career, obtaining work from the likes of Williams-Sonoma, Gumas Advertising, Eleven, Big Design and Levi Strauss. Rosenberg was eventually lured to Dunlop Manufacturing, where he led multiple design projects from catalogs to trade show booths, with a special focus on package design. At Old Navy, Rosenberg's last career stop, he led the inhouse packaging department, and his designs and art direction have revolutionized Old Navy packaging across all divisions of the brand.

Rosenberg's poster work has been featured in PRINT's Best Regional Design Annual 2000 and One-Color Graphics: The Power of Contrast. Twelve of his record covers and posters were featured at the Richmond Art Center's spring 2003 showcase of Bay Area independent record design. His packaging has been featured in Packaging Digest, GDUSA and HOW.

Is graphic design a growth industry? There is plenty of demand out there for good creative. As consumers become evermore savvy, I believe the appetite for smart creative folks will endure for some time.

Do graphic designers have a special responsibility to promote a green society? In my line of work, packaging, I think we do have a responsibility to think green. Packaging essentially is waste. In a way, that's the fun of it: to elevate a product and entice a purchase. We designers play a key role in dictating how much packaging is necessary and what materials should be used. Are they recyclable and sustainable? We can direct our clients and brands to choose more responsible ways to packaging their products, like suggesting less materials or eco-friendly substrates.
