While they may seem more corporate than other design groups, The Port Authority of NY & NJ Creative Services is an award-winning inhouse design team that is both unique and diverse. From 2D to 3D design, this creative team is an integral part of a bistate agency that provides vital transportation links such as airports, tunnels, bridges, the PATH rail system and port commerce facilities throughout the New York and New Jersey region. Serving many different clients, from corporate and marketing staff to customers that use the agency's services, the creative team has designed and produced numerous campaigns that include items such as printed collateral, large-scale pieces, custom displays and exhibits. Integrally involved in the agency's day-to-day demands, they successfully deliver on the company's branding, because they know it from all sides—they breathe it everyday. They recently worked on the new PATH SmartLink Card campaign, which involved the design and production of brochures, posters, buttons, decals, badges, flyers, point-of-purchase displays, screens for TV monitors and vending machines and in-station signage, as well as a kick-off exhibit and an information booth.

Is graphic design a growth industry? The key is to accept and explore the challenge that design inherently presents. As long as designers continue exploring, there will continue to be growth. Some challenges for today's designers include staying informed of new methods and processes and promoting understanding among their clients. Creative professionals, however, need to uphold the standard of viewing and presenting their work as important marketing tools that have a critical role in influencing public perception.

Do graphic designers have a special responsibility to promote a green society? While we believe that everyone must play a part, designers can lend knowledge to the process of reducing our carbon footprint. Steps such as educating ourselves and our clients are just as important as using environmentally sustainable paper and printing locally. Within our own agency, we realize the importance of marketing and communications to encourage and highlight greener solutions. Ecologically friendly vehicles are far from new to the Port Authority; our design team was recently called upon to create a new logo promoting the beneficial aspects of these vehicles and thereby encouraging public awareness of our responsibilities to the environment.

ONE THING I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IS a pencil, a pixel, a poem, a tone or something where creativity can find a home
