ANTOINETTE WESTPHALL COLLEGE OF MEDIA ARTS & DESIGN
Kathryn Hall is a senior in the Graphic Design program at Drexel University. She has a strong passion for environmental graphic design and branding. Born in the suburbs of Philadelphia and raised in Syracuse NY, she moved back to Philly to study interior design at Drexel. “I discovered my love for graphic design when taking an introductory class,” says Hall. For the first time, she was allowed to express her creativity in ways that the technical training of interior design did not permit, and within a few weeks changed her major. Since then Hall has interned at Nelson Associates, working with the art director, and Sparks Environments and Exhibits on the fabrication team. “I found my place in the creative world while taking courses in wayfinding and exhibit design. I am obsessed with large three-dimensional letters and old signage. I enjoy collaborating on team projects and the creative process in general,” says Hall. She is currently interning at ex;it, an environmental design firm in Center City Philadelphia.
What made you decide to go to design school?
I originally intended to pursue a career in architecture. I wanted to design on a large scale in a way that people would find useful. I gradually realized that I wanted people to learn from my design, which ultimately drew me to wayfinding and exhibits. Deciding to be a designer has completely changed the way I experience the world. I can no longer look at the things around me and just move along. Instead, I am constantly aware.
