25th Annual Stock Visual Survey SPONSORED BY ISTOCKPHOTO
GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME
A quarter century ago stock photography was useful but peripheral to the professional lives of graphic designers.
It operated in a different reality: limited and predictable choice, physical search and delivery, larger budgets and slower turnaround times, a whiter and more male dominated society, a pragmatic service but one rarely discussed in civilized society. Top independent brands for GDUSA readers at that time included Comstock, FPG, The Image Bank, The Stock Market, and Tony Stone.
The results of our 25th annual reader survey tell a different story. Stock imagery has moved from marginal to mainstream to indispensable, from analog to digital, from scarce to abundant, and from staged to fresh (sometimes).
The temptation is to conclude that time changes everything. But that would be wrong. The basics - otherwise unattainable content, convenience and affordability - remain the animating principle behind stock imagery yesterday and today. And presumably, it will be the case when we present our 50th annual survey.
