Michael Osborne
PRESIDENT, MICHAEL OSBORNE DESIGN, SAN FRANCISCO CA
Branding and packaging agency Michael Osborne Design is currently celebrating 30 years of creativity and design innovation under the direction of namesake and founder Michael Osborne. Throughout those three decades, the firm has been developing memorable solutions for clients as diverse as Williams- Sonoma, the Yosemite Conservancy, and the United States Postal Service. The agency has cultivated a reputation for launching brands to success while creating sophisticated design systems that are timeless, such as Target's premium private label food line, Archer Farms, and SFMOMA's private label graphics and products. As a young Vietnam veteran and graduate of Art Center College of Design, Osborne began his business in 1981 on the proverbial dining room table; today the firm occupies a light, airy studio designed to resemble an Italian village, while his first Macintosh computer (1988) serves as a focal point of the conference room. Osborne was taught, and holds the belief, that the design process should start with the brain and a pencil, developing concepts by sketching and writing before going to the computer. He has been on the faculty of both UC Berkeley and the Academy of Art University. At the age of 55, he returned to school, receiving a 2007 MFA in Graphic Design at the Academy of Art University, and was elected Valedictorian along the way. An AIGA Fellow, Osborne is a frequent and influential lecturer at conferences and universities. His work is on display at the SFMOMA, the Cooper-Hewitt, and the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. Past and current Michael Osborne Design clients have included Allied Domecq, Brown-Forman, Constellation, Driscoll's, Kettle Foods, Kroger, Safeway, Thomas Kemper, Trinchero Family Estates, as well as others mentioned above, to name a few.
