CREATIVE PRINCIPAL, GREENBIRD DESIGN
Born in Buffalo NY, Kelly Lapin studied design at the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Fredonia. A semester abroad was an introduction to gaining a global perspective on the power of visual communication. After graduating with a BFA in Graphic Design, she relocated to NYC and was fortunate to gain a broad range of experience at design firms under leaders who exposed her to all sides of the industry at an early stage, which sparked an interest in running her own studio. With a focus on brand strategy, whether it be developing new identities or creating marketing tools for existing organizations across multiple platforms, Lappin is dedicated to translating stories in a unique and memorable way that will deliver the effective results that her clients seek. Her award-winning business, GreenBird Design, retains clients of all sizes and industries. These include: Marc Jacobs International, Architectural Systems Inc, The Fashion List, Consumer Solutions Inc., Southampton Chamber of Commerce, Slow Food East End, NY Kids Club, and Rapid Park NYC.
Where were you born or grew up, where do you live, does this effect your design style or sensibility?
I was born in Buffalo and I currently reside in Brooklyn. Brooklyn fulfills my need to be surrounded by endless sources of inspiration. It is the most creative environment I have ever lived in and I am constantly amazed at the talent people are capable of executing. Buffalo grounds me — I learned the value of making quality time for family and friends. Living in NYC, you are taught to work hard and the hours are often draining, so it’s important for me to keep a balance between work and home-life.
If you were not a designer, what would you be doing for a living?
I would love to be a chef. Cooking is another form of creative expression and has always been comforting to me. A fragrant, warm kitchen with a glass of red wine is the perfect way to end a busy day.
What is your greatest strength and weakness as a designer or design manager?
I am a perfectionist. There is a certain level of quality that I am not willing to compromise but time is money, so knowing when to stop and move on is something I will always struggle with. My greatest strength would be that I work well under pressure. Multi-tasking and working through multiple projects at once keeps me focused.
