CREATIVE DIRECTOR – U.S, MAG+
Mag+ premiered on the first iPads in April 2010 with the award-winning Popular Science+, and now supports dozens of live titles in the iTunes Store. With a powerful back-end and feature-rich app framework, Mag+ is ideal for anyone — from magazine and book publishers to catalog marketers and design agencies — wanting to bring beautiful, immersive content to the millions using this new generation of digital devices. Built by the R&D task force of global publishing powerhouse Bonnier Magazine Group, Mag+ was spun out into its own company in 2011. I signed with Mag+ this summer as Creative Director, U.S. The previous six years were spent as the Art Director for Popular Science. While I loved that role and the opportunities provided, I felt a need to move into a space where I could be a part of this grand publishing evolution. My role is to bridge the gap between the financial-speak of the sales team and the design language of the creative industry for which the Mag+ tools were built. My 14 years’ experience as a print designer have enabled me to relate to those thousands of creatives who are watching their canvases evolve right before their minds’ eyes. While the strength of print will live on for some time, it is imperative that those of us who love creating find the best tools available in order to continue to do so.
Where were you born or grew up, where do you live, does this effect your design style or sensibility?
I was born in the Bronx, raised in New Jersey and have never lived more than two hours from Manhattan. Even though I have traveled extensively in the last 10 years, I always return to New York. There is so much inspiration just floating by on the ether that you can’t help but be influenced.
If you were not a designer, what would you be doing for a living?
If I was any good at calculus, I would have been an architect. Scoring a 17 on my very first calculus exam helped me commit to becoming a designer pretty early on.
What is your greatest strength and weakness as a designer or design manager?
My greatest strength as both a designer and a manager has been my ability to recognize the best paths and strongest talent required to execute a design project most efficiently. However, procrastination often prohibits me from optimizing all of the time alloted to a project.
