Students to Watch in 2012
Melissa Deckert came to New York from Austin TX in 2008. After pursuing interests in fine arts, illustration, and graphic design, she now brings handmade elements and experimental concepts into her work in Pratt’s Undergraduate Communications Design department. Melissa is fueled by adventures in new neighborhoods, barbeque, borderline obsessive list-making, and licorice mint tea. She is currently a senior and an art director for the yearbook. She plans to start a business with a friend and fellow Pratt designer, and will travel to every continent (except Antarctica — too cold for a Texan).
What have you gained from attending design school?
One of my biggest struggles coming into Pratt was the feeling that I had to choose one creative pursuit and stick to it in order to excel. Over time, I've come to find that the more creative outlets I introduce myself to, the greater my work becomes. Living in an environment surrounded by so many talented individuals has shed light on the importance of working with other majors, and I’ve learned how graphic design can have an impact on any and all art forms.
