Hamish Campbell is Creative Director of Pearlfisher’s New York studio, leading and inspiring the design team by setting the creative standard – continually encouraging designers to demonstrate brilliant conceptual thinking and strong design craftsmanship. Campbell brings a diverse international experience across branding, packaging, retail and print design to the studio. Prior to moving Stateside, he worked with some of London’s leading design consultancies, fast developing a strong track record for innovative design, including award-winning work for iconic brands such as Johnnie Walker, Bacardi, Ferrero and Nike. In all aspects of his life, Campbell believes in pushing boundaries and discovering the unexpected, while relishing the simple and the everyday. Pearlfisher is an independent design company with studios in London and New York.

Where were you born?
Kettering, UK Northamptonshire

Who would you say is the most influential graphic designer of the past 50 years? How have they influenced your design?
Robert Brownjohn. I think his ever-creative vision and ability to recreate and interpret design in the most unsuspecting way is incredible. He is always pushing the boundaries of the medium and his constant reinvention is inspirational. What I admire most about his work is his ever present wit. This has fed strongly into my own design mentality. I always push myself to look at everything I do from a different angle and to play with the design – get my hands dirty – step away from the computer and sketch.

What is your greatest strength and weakness as a designer or design manager?
Strength: An eye for acute detail allows me to make the unexpected desirable.
Weakness: Killing routes I love.
