DESIGNER

Timothy Goodman is a designer, illustrator, and an art director based in New York City. Currently he runs his own studio, working on a variety of projects for clients such as the New York Public Library, Suntrust Bank, Ace Hotel, FlexFit Headwear, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Time. Previously, Goodman worked inhouse at Apple, where he helped integrate Apple’s visual language, domestically and internationally, across third party environments, retail stores, events and campaign launches. He has received awards from most major design and illustration organizations and publications, including the Art Directors Club Young Guns award and Print Magazine’s 20 under 30 “New Visual Artist.” Born in Cleveland, he graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he now teaches.

Where were you born and where do you live now? How does that affect your design sensibility?
Growing up in Cleveland, from a family of modest means, I learned how to be scrappy as a youngster. I think my work reflects that. And living in NYC allows me to do what I love, with the people I admire most, in a city that has a capacity for it all.

Who would you say is the most influential graphic designer of the past 50 years? How have they influenced your design?
There are many who have changed the face of graphic design and influenced me tremendously, but I can only speak to my experience. In a time where there seems to be more and more “designistrators,” no one has inspired my generation to bridge the gap between design and illustration more than Paul Sahre.

What is your greatest strength and weakness as a designer or design manager?
Life is play is love is work is fun is life.
